Tool and die makers are the reason why the die cutting and stamping industry in the Philippines continuous to flourish. It takes a lot of skill and experience just to be a successful tool and die maker. However, there is this misconception this job is all about dirty work. But what it really takes to be one? Is it really about machines, grease, and stuff?

  • Adores math
The entry level education is to be a high school graduate, but you must love math during your schooling years. If you happen to develop a certain interest on algebra, statistics, trigonometry, geometry, calculus, and physics, then you are all set. This job requires strong problem solving skills because it will involve dealing with measurements of workpieces such as microelectronic parts.


  • A skilled machine operator
Most likely, you will be dealing with machines all the time. It involves attention to detail, dexterous hands and a lot of concentration. One of the tools you will encounter is a Computer-numerically Controlled (CNC) machine.

  • Inclined with programming and computers
Yes, it is not all about machines as you will be expected to understand several programming languages. You will also be working on Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) softwares. Nowadays, designs are not manually created. The die cutting and stamping industry had seen the advantage of using technology in terms of mass production and precise output.

  • Able to read blueprints and designs
If you are already familiar with CAD and CAM softwares, this is an easy task for you. Aside from interpreting meticulous designs, you should be able to create one as well.

  • Subject to intensive training
Aside from a high school diploma, your on-the-job training should be labor-intensive as it determines how skilled you are. It also acts as a leverage or advantage against some applicants because of the knowledge and practice you acquired during your training.

These are some of the characteristics a tool and die maker must have to be able to withstand the demanding nature of the job. It does not only deal with machines and tools. Technology also plays a role to efficiently perform the task that was manually handled before. It seems a fairly lucrative career as well, because as long as there is a need to assemble a laptop, a car, or an airplane, this industry is here to stay.
